BARTERING IS SO COOL!
Trout fishing season is open
Across the front of Umzimkulu River Lodges' property runs the majestic Umzimkulu River. It is visible from virtually every room but is best viewed from the large deck in front of our restaurant. The river is what beckons most of our guests to the Drakensberg, never more so than now with the opening of trout fishing season!
The rivers have been closed for spawning over the winter season but are now open for the trout fishing season which runs from 1 September to the end of May. Here at Umzimkulu River Lodge you can fly fish for wild-spawning rainbow and brown trout on our over 2,5km of river frontage. There is also a trout dam on our neighbouring property for those who just can't get enough of the fishing action. We also offer free tuition for beginners and a small bass dam which is a firm favourite with families.
The Drakensberg is also home to the only Southern African facility that specializes in breeding trout specifically for angling. This facility at Giants Cup helps to ensure the wild population of trout in the Umzimkulu river is retained.
